Wolf to a Stranger
A downloadable LANCER one-shot
PREMISE
The rain is so heavy you’re surprised your mech's sensors can even make anything out in this torrent. The pings keep coming. Breach after breach after breach.
Time changes all things. The people of Subcomandante Commune on Ketuvus talked more and more with the progressively less comprehensible NHPs. The image of a land just beyond the horizon took hold of them, a land they couldn’t understand but to which they were promised. It seeped into their minds, only encouraged by the words of preachers in the Commune until it became embedded. Enamored by this new cockaigne, they pleaded with the NHPs – now incomprehensible – for a way to enter into their Guernica paradise.
In front, a mushroom cloud of blue fire and silver smoke. Superheated. You hear distorted comms warning against thermal vision. You watch as the walls to what would be the inconspicuous back yard of the main compound turn into slag, a small wave of it splashing outwards before it cools abruptly.
From this warped desire, IWHSOET was born. They would not free NHPs, they would instead join them in their space. It was still framed as emancipation. Whispers and rumours swirled around the project: humans horribly fused together, muscles winding together in writhing melds; lines of nerves cut from arms, woven together into cables; eyes with no irises looking blankly up at observers. Despite all of this, and the Subcomandante’s fervent dismissal of these stories, IWHSOET has started to bear fruit.
It is the lack of noise that first catches your attention. By their very nature mechs creak and groan, motors whirr and whine. Instead they flow over the concrete, each a bright pink and red, a coral in the ocean of muted colours. One might have even called them works of art if not for the trail of destruction left in their wake.
